Chapter 2
You need more ram?

Acceptance and knowledge are empowering if not enlightening.
No one in the PC market and now most of the technology sectors want to talk about this so honestly. Its just not in their best interest financially.
Now with the Internet following the same pattern lets keep it going whether it works or not, but makes a huge profit for us. The philosophy, the snowball of technological dysfunction, is growing daily.

Has anyone ever told you in customer service when you call to complain that "my computer or Internet connection isnt working." and they respond with
“ You need more ram”or “your hard drive is too small”.

Follow the pea under the shell and they call this technical support. I was one of the first people to build and own a computer and I can tell you they will rarely answer honestly and say, your computer is broken, please return it for a refund.

Even if it is the reason, its because the software is broke, oops I am sorry I mean has a bug, no not bug, I mean upgrade, no I mean your using the old version. The best piece of technical support I can give everyone is when your PC isnt working and I don't care what the problem is save data and reboot. Your PC is temporarily broke or tired. Reboot. I have “repaired”hundreds of PCs with this technique I used to even charge for it.
The self propagating mantra of “you need more ram”is the first thing taught technical support students, now in over 50 languages.

When I first bought a Microsoft IBM INTEL PC of my very own I remember booting up my first piece of software. it was a chess program called chessmaster 2000 I had played on the Amiga previously and enjoyed so much.

There it was a beautiful graphic of the chess pieces then I clicked enter.
Oops what is this? The pixels were here and there and it was unplayable and then it crashed. I had no idea what happened. So I asked fellow PC users and they said “did you check the requirements to play it? Do you have enough ram? How big is your Hard drive? Did you install the driver?”I was dumbfounded . I called technical support and received exactly the same response.

I didn't need any of these things for the Amiga to play exactly the same game and the Amiga wasn't anywhere near as powerful as this PC? But yet somehow it was more efficient and superior in graphics and sound and certainly didn't crash.

I knew then I was in a IBM/Microsoft world, where broken computers and poorly designed software was the norm and on top of that it was my fault because I didn't buy enough ram.
I was not happy and I decided to edit the software and the windows operating system. Some people call it hacking, to see if I could make the software work without adding memory. My fellow users were astonished and mocking me when I told them what I was doing. “You cant do that you need more ram its just that simple”. I responded with "maybe the software is written poorly and the operating system is using too much ram to operate.". Day after day I toiled with several IBM/Microsoft experts gaining interest in my pursuit and increasing their verbal abuse. Well I fixed Chessmaster and there I was playing Kasparov at the highest level on the very same PC without hardware alteration of any kind. Soon my fellow PC users witnessed this and were stunned at my endeavour. They all lauded me but only a couple said maybe this mantra of “more ram”is not true.

I witnessed this mantra becoming omnipotent. I even caught myself repeating it to other users daily. I was assimilated into the Borg resistance was futile. I just realized I hit the save button every 4 or 5 minutes while creating this document the insecurity is rampant. I don't remember ever saving until I was closing when I was using the Amiga. Many of the same comparisons are made by Mac users however the Intel incorporation will end their happy tale soon.

Microsoft and Intel are dominant and thats a fact we live with. But “more ram”we don't have to live with that anymore.

Try it with me. Will call it open source technical support. Next time your PC doesn't work or someone in technical support drones the mantra “more ram”just reboot instead. Send your findings into me at ktn@keystothenet.com I will record and archive them. And for all you PC gurus and hackers break the software down and hack the windows O.S. and get the software working on a system that is lower or significantly lower than the requirements written on the box and send me a report or better yet a copy of the software or workaround.
We will build a library of efficient software that demonstrates that the mantra is untrue. Will start a new mantra “we don't need no more stinkin ram ”

Microsoft windows releases a “new”O.S. Like Winxp or now Vista but their not selling you the latest most technologically advanced software they have. Not a chance not even close. They sell you what ever you will buy and that technology is more than 16 years behind the times. It is also guaranteed to need technical support (because its broken)and definitely new ram or bigger hard drive and more than likely a new computer entirely. Why would they do this? To make more money of course.

Its old technology and it doesn't work and your buying it, hell your excited and running to the store to buy it. The bigger question is why are you buying it not why are they selling it. At least their reasoning makes sense.

I hear teenagers raving about their video games a lot. I go and check them out all excited to see the new stuff. What a let down. First of all there not even video games their animated pixels and poorly done animated pixels. Pick up a copy of the AMIGA32 video games from 16 years ago. They actually had video and great sound. These new video games are dull scrolling slightly 3d pixelated versions of super mario that cost a lot more and take ridiculously huge amounts of ram and expensive high end computers to even run this garbage. What are you thinking kids this stuff is old boring and no where near as good as before.
You think this is the best they can come up with in video games? First person shoot em up RPG with horrible monotonous boring script writing. They tease you in the commercials and even in the intros or breaks during the actual playing of the game with actual video. As if this is special high technology. Really you think so? Go back a decade or so to see this special technology in action its actually really old technology repackaged . Talk about regifting.

Consumerist drones all of us by the millions now without the ability or desire to discern truth or quality in product anymore. Oops fell back into my star trek thought pattern again.

The joysticks today are pathetic tiny little color coded buttons with curser pointers at least they have graduated from the keyboard now.

I remember playing my F18 fighter game on my big screen tv with the walls shaking from the sound as I blew up another MIG playing on my Amiga in my living room. Using a beautiful joystick not tiny keypads or arrow keys where I could feel and sense the movements of the plane until my neighbors called the police on me telling them they heard gun shots coming from my condo. Yes the quality was so good I could play it directly from my computer with a SVHS output to my 40 inch big screen and it was perfect. All of this came standard with my computer. I didn't buy special joysticks, high end graphic or sound cards That was 16 years ago try that today. The point is, even if you get close to matching that quality, so what, that was a long time ago what happened? Why wasn't this technology improved and developed instead of squashed and hidden. I don't know why don't you ask Bill Gates?

The answers are clear and most of the reasons are greed and more greed. We respect and even honour these people today talk about assimilated.
