Chapter 13
Ignoring updates and upgrades

One of the biggest tips and give you and I believe this is number 409 and definitely one of the biggest. Whenever your software tissue the wonderful opportunity to upgrade. Always select no. Do this with grace and pretend you never seen the request. First of all most upgrades are not upgrades their downgrades or worst of all their attempts to turn you into a guinea pig and even worse a non paid guinea pig.

In fact, some upgrades will remove features that were great benefit to you some upgrades will not allow you to do what you did prior to the upgrade. Let me give you example, and of course the most wonderful example of this will be from our friends at Microsoft. The Windows media player is the most common and most used media player on computers. Of course this is not because it's the best ,is because it is installed automatically on every computer every time you install any Windows operating system. Recently, Microsoft upgraded Windows media player from Windows media player nine through to Windows media player 11. And of course 99% of PC users agree to the upgrade, or simply allowed the automatic upgrade to install the new versions Windows media player 11 has a new skin in other words, it looks significantly different from the previous player. It has other features, not better features. Other features, one of the biggest downgrades to this upgrade. I know this is starting to sound ridiculous, but has nothing to do with me I'm just the messenger.I'm sorry, I digress.

The brand-new spanking Windows media player doesn't allow you to play DVDs anymore. You must purchase an additional piece of software that Microsoft will happily provide you with a link.

Yes that's true, they update. Then they take away one of its most important features and then charge you to replace it.
It is one of the most hilarious and frightening things I've ever seen. I recently tried to uninstall Windows media player 11 for a friend of mine and discovered that it would simply not allow you to uninstall. When you would hit delete on the file. It would go away as if it had been deleted and then pop back on again. It was like magic or some kind of virus. I said to my friend, I think you got the Windows media player virus. You should call Bill and tell him tell. I got problem, I got unbelievably bad virus on my computer it is called Windows media player, how I do get rid of it bill?

Well of course Bill won't answer you, so I will here is the link to get rid of it.

Of course there are several solutions to getting rid of it depending on the operating system and whatever the hell you did prior to installing Windows media player 11. So read the whole thing and find the one that applies to you.

that's the latest Google result for Windows media player 10 problems. That's over 1 ½ million links. And they call that an upgrade, what do you call it?

The link below is an article describes precisely what I'm talking about
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=34523
basically Windows media player 11 won't even allow you to backup your licenses from DVDs are you purchased, and certainly will allow you to play DVDs directly. The latest fiasco is all wrapped up in the wonderful DRM or digital rights management or high-bandwidth Digital content protection(HDCP) implementations.

If you google for information about upgrading problems with each and every piece of software you have. You'll be stunned at three, the sheer number of problems that exist with upgrades. It is only common sense after reading most of these were even a couple that you would be extremely wary, not to allow an upgrade ever again by any piece of software on your computer.
One of the other disconcerting issues about upgrades, is the fact that they sometimes cause your previous files that you created using the software to become useless. In other words, the upgrade is not backward compatible to any existing files. And of course the usual standby, if nothing else screws up your computer. The new upgrade will just fail to work and you will be spending hours and hours trying to resolve this issue. My next big tip is for you to be patient and wait and then wait some more. And then a research before ever attempting to upgrade any piece of software. Next, go into the preferences of all beer software and turn off automatic updating. You can leave a notice of updates checked on, but when you receive the notice I recommend strongly you ignore it.

What I maintained over the years, not just in computer software or hardware, but in all electronics is a strong desire and need to keep the previous and old electronics, functioning in some senses, I have certainly become a packrat. However, I have gained large advantages. By doing this, some of the older technology has more features than the newer technology so the older technology can do with the new technology cannot or will not allow you to do, which has become more more prominent. Recently, through all kinds of censoring boards, and under the cloak of piracy. Several institutions and organizations under the directive veils of corporations havehave been allowed to remove consumer rights without question, and charge for services that used to be free and inherent in their own products, and then they introduced legislation that makes it a legal in fact to use their old product in hypocrisy is self-evident. However, I would love to see a lawyer, who would go into court and then defend me for being charged with using old technology to do precisely what it was intended to do when it was sold to me. Now that would be an interesting court case I'd almost guarantee you that no corporation in the world would entertain such a court case, because the last thing they want to be doing is discussing the relevancy of this issue. In fact, I can see my first offense being well. I think I should charge of the corporation with producing such a illegal products in the first-place.

For example, my new HD DVD player will not allow me to play several other movies I have purchased and even some that I've rented. If I put the very same DVDs in my old DVD player. Mild player will play the DVDs flawlessly, and without complaint and will not excuse me, piracy or any other crime. That's right, you DVDs that are created and sold you have a copy protection built right into them. That will not allow you to play them on certain players or players that have not been set up with the proper parameters. In one of the most upsetting features is that some of this copy protection. Actually makes the DVD unplayable anyways. So, you're not allowed to make a backup of your DVD in case you want to play it on another player or in another room in your house or take it with you to the cottage. Now you can't do that. That is piracy that is stealing. That is illegal, you will be charged.

Of course, Microsoft is not the only corporations. That is involved in this issue Apple, Microsoft brother certainly has a notorious reputation for those with the iPod and iTunes. Or they won't even allow you to play the tunes that you purchased legally from them on any other player except an Apple iPod.
I believe the high tech industry has done the public a great disservice because I hear them talking about this writing about this discussing this all the time and they usually get into such a high-tech mumble jumble that the average person could not possibly comprehend what that talking about. So as a result, no one knows precisely that if you buy a two from iTunes and try to play it on any other player besides the iPod, you will have great difficulty or simply will not be allowed to do it. Why don't they just come right out and say that as clearly as I did above.
However if you have an old Windows media player version and did not upgrade like me. Or you have an old DVD player or an old VCR player. You don't have to worry about any of the things I mentioned previously.
The corporations would call this hacking

If you attempt to do what you use to do with their equipment. They will call it piracy or hacking and charge you.even some of the physical inputs that exist on the old equipment that these manufacturers make would be considered illegal by the same manufacturers today. So my recommendation to you is to go out and purchase all of the old equipment that you use down and hang onto it to the end of time. And if you can find some old computers, like say a Pentium 4 with all the old software still not hard drive. I scoop that up as fast as I could if I were you.

Really, I think that is my best tip definitely my best tip.

Did I mention purchase Goback and then of course, all you have to do is go back to the day before you installed the upgrade. yes see my link above, and please go purchase Goback. Can I say this enough times no I can't.
